Ethiopian Airlines hijacked, forced to land in Geneva

A hijacker forced an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft (not the one above) to land in Geneva early Monday morning

An Ethiopian Airlines flight, bound for Rome, was hijacked early Monday morning and forced to land in Geneva.

The incident ended shortly afterward with the hijacker's arrest and without injury to the plane's passengers and crew, police said.

Ethiopian Airlines Flight 702 had taken off from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa and was headed to Rome, the airline said.

It was "forced to proceed" to Geneva International Airport, the airline added without elaborating.

Geneva police spokesman Jean-Philippe Brandt told CNN the plane had been hijacked and that the man behind the act was in their custody.

He did not say what the hijacker's nationality was, nor provide additional details.

Police said they will hold a news conference in the coming hours to share more.

During the incident, Geneva International Airport was shut down. It reopened later Monday morning.
