THE passengers were returning home from the NCAA college basketball championship game in Indianapolis early on Tuesday morning.

The wreckage was found in the northwest field of the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington, Illinois, two hours south of Chicago.

The Bloomington Sheriff's office told the Chicago Tribune that the plane, a Cessna 414, departed from the Indianapolis airport late on Monday night amid low visibility because of heavy fog.

According to the director of the airport, Carl Olson, the pilot made no alterations to the flight plan.

The crash will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
