THE disgraced captain of the Costa Concordia went back on board for the first time yesterday and was told: “Drown yourself.”
But angry onlookers could be heard shouting “Drown yourself” and other abuse.
Schettino is accused of deliberately altering the course of the Concordia to impress friends on the Italian island of Giglio with a sail-by salute.
The liner had just started a seven-day Mediterranean cruise. But the alleged showmanship turned to tragedy when it struck rocks, resulting in 32 deaths.
The defence team wanted to inspect generators in the engine room claiming they were faulty.
Francesco Schettino – dubbed Captain Calamity and Captain Coward – visited the wreck with his lawyer, prosecutors and a judge.
He
is accused of multiple manslaughter, abandoning the luxury ship while
passengers and crew were still on board, and causing a catastrophe in
January 2012.
Schettino, 53, claimed on Italian TV before his visit: “I am returning to honour those who died that night.”
