The van was parked up close to the city's Bullring shopping centre while they were dealing with a shoplifter yesterday afternoon.

But they were shocked when they returned and found a severed pig's head left on the bottom of the windscreen between the wipers.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police confirmed the force had launched an investigation into the incident - which could be classified as a public order offence or criminal damage.

They added: "Police are investigating after the head of a dead pig was placed on a police vehicle in Birmingham City Centre.

"The incident took place around 12.55pm (on) Wednesday as the police vehicle was parked at the Rotunda in New Street.

"Officers have removed the animal's head and are actively looking at CCTV images to identify the person responsible."

Witness James Miles, 24, who was out shopping when he spotted the pigs head, said: "We couldn't believe it when we came out of the Bullring and saw it on the police van.
"There was quite a crowd around it taking pictures and most people seemed to think it was pretty funny."
