The Federal Government in Abuja on Friday has restated its commitment to providing quality healthcare in Nigeria to check medical tourism.
The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, made this known while signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between American Hospital Ltd, Nigeria, General Electricity (GE) Healthcare and Edifice Capital.
Chukwu said government was ready to support the private sector to invest in the health sector to fast track the provision of quality healthcare in the country.
"President Goodluck Jonathan has shown his commitment to the health sector in several ways and government is intensifying effort at providing quality healthcare to Nigerians. Government will not relent on its effort at ensuring that every Nigerian enjoys good healthcare services. We are not paying lip-service to the concept of Public Private Partnership, government is committed to that."
Also in his remarks, Mr Jeff Immelt, Chief Executive Officer, GE, said the beneficiaries of the hospital would be women and children.
Immelt said funding had been the major challenge in developing projects in Africa but expressed optimism that the hospital would give the kind of quality healthcare services that made Nigerians travel abroad.
