A HIGH school student who leapt in to defend a gay student as he was being attacked has been SUSPENDED for 10-days.
RESCUE: Mark Betterson (L) helped to break up a violent attack on gay student Jonathan Colon
Mark Betterson says he realised he needed to do something when he
saw Jonathan Colon, 18, having milk thrown in his face, being taunted
with gay slurs and struck on the head.
Classmates of Colon say the 18-year-old's homosexuality was the main reason behind the shocking attack.
James Griffin, also 18, has been charged with battery while Colon has been left with bruises to his head.
The incident took place at East Lee County High School in Florida and Betterson has said he would do the same again.
He said: "Jonathan was just going to stand there and get beat up. And if I didn't jump into it, it would have got serious.
"It would have been worse than what he got.
FIGHT: The attack occurred at East Lee County High School in Florida
"I was just trying to break up the whole thing because it's not fair for somebody to get beat up for something that he is.
"That's not really called for."
Betterson says he has been given his suspension as the school operates a zero-tolerance policy on fighting.
Administrators will meet today to look into the case.
