Tensions mount in Italy's coalition government

ROME (AP) Italian Premier Enrico Letta is prodding his coalition allies to get results in Parliament as Italians grow impatient over the struggling economy and pressures mount for a Cabinet shake-up.


Some politicians have even suggested that Letta step down and be replaced by his Democratic Party's secretary, Matteo Renzi.

Just back from the Persian Gulf to drum up investment in Italy, Letta on Wednesday summoned the parliamentary party whips from coalition forces, which range from Democrats to ex-loyalists of conservative leader Silvio Berlusconi.

The partners have sparred over Renzi's proposals for electoral reforms to make Parliament and government more effective. Near daily brawling in Parliament further reflects heightened political tensions.
Democrats hope a strategy session with Letta and Renzi on Thursday will invigorate the government.
