Manchester City will bid to consolidate their hold on the top of the Premier League by splashing out £40million on Porto duo Fernando and Eliaquim Mangala later today.


Manuel Pellegrini’s men moved top of the table with Wednesday’s 5-1 win at Spurs and their deadline day plans prove City are serious about winning back the title they won in 2012.

Fernando and Eliaquim Mangala could be on their way to Manchester City

French centre-back Mangala has long been a target for City, Chelsea and Manchester United but the Etihad Stadium club are poised to win the race for the 22-year-old and are also ready to take defensive midfielder Fernando in a £40m double deal.

Fernando, 26, is out of contract in the summer and is expected to resist Porto’s attempts to extend his stay in Portugal.

The swoop could have repercussions at the other end of the table, with Mangala’s arrival allowing City to entertain West Ham’s interest in Joleon Lescott.
