Body has been found in missing Mikaeel investigation

DETECTIVES searching for missing three-year-old Mikaeel Kular last night found a body. The grim discovery was made shortly before midnight.

Mikaeel Kular, investigation, body recovered
SEARCH: While fire and rescue searched in vain yesterday, a body has now been found in Fife

Asst Chief Const Malcolm Graham held a hastily arranged press conference in the early hours.
And there were audible gasps from the assembled journalists when he announced the grim news.
The body was found in Fife - over the Forth Road Bridge from the boy's home in Edinburgh.
Mr Graham said: "I can confirm that we have recovered the body of a young boy in Fife shortly before midnight.

"We have informed the family and the investigation continues."
One person has been detailed in connection with the death.
Police did not reveal whether that person was a man or woman.
Nor did they say whether the suspect had been formally arrested.

Mr Graham thanked the hundreds of people who had assisted in searched across the Edinburgh area since the youngster was reported missing on Thursday morning.
The grim-faced cop said: "Without such vital assistance, the police cannot do their job."
The appalling news sparked a wave of sadness across the city - and the whole of the UK.

The nation had held its breath since news first broke that Mikaeel had vanished.
At first police thought the youngster - despite his age - could possibly have let himself out of the flat where he lived with his twin sister and other siblings.
But yesterday they began to suggest that Mikaeel may have been the victim of a "criminal act."
That raised the possibility that he may have been snatched.

After a two-day air, sea and land search failed to find the youngster, police spoke yesterday of their “grave concerns” for his safety.
Mikaeel, who has not been at nursery since Christmas due to illness, was reported missing on Thursday. His distraught mother Rosdeep, 33, said she went to wake him shortly after 7am but found he had vanished from his bed.

One of the few leads is the sighting of a young lad running down a road near Mikaeel’s home in Edinburgh shortly after he disappeared.
But the boy was wearing a hat, something Mikaeel rarely did.
Superintendent Liz McAinsh said: “He doesn’t like wearing a hat or a cap, is my understanding, and to our knowledge he didn’t have one.
“There’s not one missing from the house.”

Supt McAinsh said CCTV also showed a boy in the street, but she could not confirm it was Mikaeel.
It emerged yesterday that Mikaeel’s mum, known to friends as Rosie, was pals with shooting victim Mohammed Abdi.

Drugs suspect Mr Abdi, 25, was last year killed in a machine-gun attack believed to be gang-related. Six Somali men are accused of carrying out the murder.
Earlier yesterday, police said Mikaeel’s father, who has yet to be named, and other members of the family were helping with inquiries.
