TWO 50ft naked Buddha statues have been removed from the side of a busy
shopping centre after causing an uproar among outraged onlookers.
Shoppers had mixed reactions when seeing the statues hanging off a restaurant in Jinan, China, for the first time.
One is positioned climbing the wall, with its bottom facing the street and the other is waiting on top of the wall.
The sculptures, inspired by an old Chinese tale, sparked heated debate online with many saying the two pieces of artwork were "disrespectful" to the Buddhists.
Miaoming, from the Beihai Zen Monastery in Qinghai province, China, wrote on his microblog: “I burst into tears when I saw naked Buddhas climbing over the wall! How come a nation with a thousand-year history has so little respect for its own culture?”
The Chinese tale, with the name of "Buddha Jumps Over the Wall”, tells the story of a Buddhist monk that scrambled over a wall to try some delicious smelling soup.
In the story, a poet claimed that Buddha would have done the same - hence the statues.
A Chinese soup dish, which has risen to popularity in China, has been named after the tale.
