JERMAIN DEFOE'S move from Tottenham to Toronto has raised eyebrows in
the footballing world with many saying it's the end of his chances of
making the England squad to fly to Brazil for the World Cup, but Defoe
thinks otherwise.
"I call it a good pressure and I'm looking forward to doing well.
"I did think about my chances of going to the World Cup (when I signed for Toronto).
"I've been to a World Cup before and it's the greatest thing in the world, it's the reason you play football.
"It did cross my mind but at the same time I think the MLS will be fantastic for me and it's important to be playing - hopefully I'll be on the plane.
"I've played in the Premier League my whole career, scored a lot of goals, and at the age of 31 I would like to think that the England manager knows what I can do and what I bring to the team."
Defoe believes that if he keeps scoring for his
new side, who he joins on 28 February, then he will be in with a good
chance of going to Brazil with England.
The
England striker spoke of his ambitions as he was unveiled at a press
conference in Toronto today alongside fellow new signing Michael
Bradley.
Defoe said: "I love challenges and I want to feel that fire in my belly.
"For me, the most important thing is getting my boots on and scoring goals which I've always done from a young age.
"I want to show that I can perform outside the Premier League.
"I'm looking forward to the pressure (of scoring goals).
