Tired Ed, 22, tweeted: “Ah jetlag, we meet again. Been awake for 24 hours, that bulletproof coffee did its job but worked overtime.”
The I See Fire singer was up for best new artist alongside Mercury Prizewinning fellow Brit James Blake, 25.
Meanwhile Sir Paul, 71, took on the Rolling Stones for best rock song with his Nirvana collaboration Cut Me Some Slack.
Other nominees in the UK-dominated category included heavy metal veterans Black Sabbath and stadium rockers Muse.
