World's 85 richest elites as wealthy as three and a half billion people COMBINED

THE richest 85 people on the planet have as much money as the poorest half of the world's population.

A combined total of wealth, from the likes of Microsoft's Bill Gates and the world's richest man Carlos Slim, comes to £1trillion - equal to three and a half billion people.


It was also revealed that the top 1% of the world's elite are worth a whopping £67.3trillion that amounts to 46 per cent of the world's overall wealth.

The shocking new statistics unveiled in a report by Oxfam have sparked fears that the world's wealth gap is a cause for concern.

Winnie Byanyima, chief executive, said: "It is staggering that, in the 21st century half of the world's population - that's three and a half billion people - own no more than a tiny elite whose numbers could all fit comfortably on a double-decker bus.

"We cannot hope to win the fight against poverty without tackling equality.
"Widening inequality is creating a vicious circle where wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, leaving the rest of us to fight over crumbs from the top table."

The report, Working for the Few, has been released ahead of this week's World Economic Forum at the luxury Swiss resort of Davos.It explains how the gap between rich and poor is extending year to year in every economy.

The world now has 1,426 billionaires with a combined wealth of £3.3trillion.
A poll in the report showed that people around the world felt the the rich have too much control on national activity.

More than two thirds (67 per cent) of the UK agreed that "the rich have too much influence over where this country is headed" with 37% saying that they agreed "strongly".
Market research firm Research Now questioned 1,166 adults in the UK between October 1 and 14 2013 about the effect of the wealth gap.
